Let's Drive across Switzerland into Austria
We knew that tihs was the longest drive of our entire trip, so I was very happy when it was not raining when we woke up. But it didn't take long to see that that this was going to be quite a trip up and down mountains, in a foreign country. Oooh boy. This is the screen shot from the Mercedes Google map. It's only 2D.
Here's the real world view. As you can see, the road has "a few" hairpin turns and loops back and forth to get up the mountain. See the camper on the upper level? It must have been so hard to bring large vehicles over the mountains. There were full size 18 wheelers, campers, and cars full of bikes, all moving through the turns. and YES, those are cows, nonchalantly grazing inbetween the turns. They are not fenced in. But they stayed on the green, and off of the black.
What a beautiful country! Every balcony was full of flowers. I couldn't get enough of the geraniums, petunias, and color. Every roundabout was full of flowers too. Here is our hotel for the night, and the view from the window.
There don't seem to be any bugs; windows did not have screens. We made it to Fusch, Austria in time for a long draft beer and a a grilled meat and vegetable dinner. Chuck had the schnitzel and a really interesting apple struedel, which they garnished with chocolate. There is a tradition of having a digestive after the meal. Here were my choices.
I had a grappa. It was a locally made, very strong alcohol that the waiter said kept him from getting sick. Okay, I'll try it!
